Salt Lake City is the capital and most populous city of the state of Utah. The name of the city is often shortened to Salt Lake or by its initials SLC. Salt Lake City has a population of over 180,000 as of the 2007 census estimate. The Salt Lake City metropolitan area spans Salt Lake, Summit and Tooele counties and has a total estimated population of one of just over 1 million. Salt Lake City is also situated in a large urban area commonly known as the Wasatch Front and is part of the Salt Lake City-Ogden-Clearfield CSA that has an estimated population of just over 1.7 million people. the total estimated population of the Wasatch Front is approximately 2.2 million people.

Salt Lake City was founded in 1847 as Great Salt Lake City by a group of Mormon pioneers led by their prophet Brigham Young. The early settlers extensively irrigated and cultivated the predominately arid high-desert valley.  Today, Salt Lake City is still home to the headquarters of The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints ( also known as the Mormon church).

Mining booms and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad initially brought economic growth and the city was nicknamed the Crossroads of the West. Salt Lake City has since developed a strong outdoor recreation tourism industry based primarily on skiing but also includes other high desert activities as well as being a transportation gateway to other outdoor destination areas within Utah including its many national parks as backcountry areas. Salt Lake City (along with a good portion of the Wasatch Front) was also host to the 2002 Winter Olympics. For additional background information, please refer to the Wikipedia entry.
