Layton was first settled in 1850 and was considered part of the larger area known as Kaysville until 1886 when it was officially designated as Layton. Layton is the largest city in Davis County with a population of approximately 60,000. Layton is located at the northeastern corner of Davis County tucked up against the Wasatch Mountains on its eastern edge and bordered by I-15 to the west, state highway 89 to the east and I-84 to the north.
Present day Layton is best known as the location of Hill Air Force Base (HAFB) which was started in 1940 as worldwide hostilities preceded the United States’ entry into World War II. The impact of HAFB on the economy of Layton, Davis County and Utah as a whole can’t really be underestimated. Data from the Bureau of Economic and Business Research (David Eccles School of Business, University of Utah) calculated the estimated economic impact of HAFB to be in excess of $1 Billion annually to Utah’s economy (copy of report located in the Links section above). HAFB is also home to the Hill Aerospace Museum in which you can see over 80 exhibits including military aircraft, missiles, and aerospace vehicles. The museum serves nearly 200,000 visitors annually.
The presence of HAFB, and its diverse military population, gives Layton a unique urban feel in a relatively smaller community. As a result of this population, Layton boasts an active commercial/retail economic environment providing its citizens with a large number of entertainment, shopping and restaurant options. As is the case with most Utah communities, you have easy access to skiing (Snow Basin, Powder Mountain), hiking, golf, biking (mountain & road), and easy access to Weber Canyon and in the summer months mountain pass access to Park City via Morgan.
